The suggested filing deadline to appear on the ballot in the Ohio primary was 4 p.m. today, and earlier this week there was questioning as to whether Newt Gingrich would be able to file the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot by this afternoon’s deadline.
However, after all the speculation, Newt Gingrich was one of three Republican presidential candidates to adhere to today’s suggested deadline in Ohio. Rick Perry and Mitt Romney also filed today in Ohio. Michele Bachmann, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum have not yet filed with the Ohio of Secretary of State.
(...) Today’s filing deadline was only a recommended deadline for presidential candidates. Ohio’s presidential primary is currently scheduled for June 12, and the actual filing deadline for presidential candidates is March 14. Today’s filing deadline in Ohio applies only to individuals hoping to run in state, local and U.S. Senate races.
The Ohio secretary of state, however, has suggested that presidential candidates adhere to today’s filing deadline as a precautionary measure, since a new law pushing back the filing deadline until March 14 hasn’t taken effect yet.

The Hill:
Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee in 2008, is moving toward endorsing a candidate for 2012.
Republican sources familiar with his thinking say he will probably endorse his onetime political enemy, Mitt Romney.
There is virtually no chance, sources say, that he will pick former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who has surged into the lead in polls, stoking consternation among his ex-colleagues on Capitol Hill.
Asked Tuesday if he might back a candidate in the GOP primary, McCain told The Hill, “Yeah, I think it would be several months later on.”
(...) A McCain endorsement would probably come after the caucuses in Iowa, where polls show Romney is trailing. The primary in New Hampshire, a state fond of McCain, soon follows Iowa’s vote.
McCain won New Hampshire in the 2000 and 2008 GOP primaries, and his endorsement would give Romney a major boost in what is a must-win state for the former governor. It would also be helpful in South Carolina, where McCain is popular among GOP voters who favor a strong national defense.
"Strong"

The Washington Times:
Newt Gingrich is surging in the presidential polls, but his campaign organization has not caught up — making it possible he’ll miss Wednesday’s deadline to file enough signatures to even appear on Ohio’s primary ballot.
Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker whose once-moribund presidential campaign has been resurrected in the polls in recent weeks, already missed the deadline for Missouri’s ballot. With several other state deadlines looming this month, his campaign is showing growing pains as it strives to meet them.
“We are going to give it our damnedest. We are going to do everything in our capacity to meet this deadline,” Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammand said of the Ohio deadline. “As far as the next deadline, we’re on pace for everything else.”
Gingrich backers said the campaign could mount a write-in effort in Ohio if need be. But missing that state’s 4 p.m. Wednesday deadline would be the latest embarrassment for Mr. Gingrich’s organization.
Mr. Hammand said this week that he intentionally missed the Missouri deadline for getting Mr. Gingrich’s name on the state primary ballot. He said the Feb. 7 primary is nonbinding, but promised to participate in caucuses there a month later, where the state’s delegates to the nominating convention will be picked.
Mr. Gingrich also turned in a messy, handwritten form for New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary and filled in only seven of the alternate-delegate slots — a distinction that is unlikely to have much impact because candidates rarely have to rely on alternates.
The stretched Gingrich team has notched some successes, though, meeting Tuesday’s deadline in Tennessee, and filing in Oklahoma ahead of that state’s Wednesday deadline, according to local news reports.

Erick Erickson, reconsiderando a Huntsman
I hope for a Perry rebound. He’s on his first wife still and has the most consistent record of conservative policies. And we hate the same people and institutions. We have the same general world view.
But if Perry is not ready, I have to say I may have to seriously reconsider saying I’d never, ever, never vote for Jon Huntsman. He is more consistently conservative than either Newt or Romney, more pro-life than either, and a far more competent executive than either. He and Perry also are very real and sincere family men. Jon Huntsman clearly adores his family and I have concluded, despite my own misgivings about him, that he would govern more consistently to the right of Mitt Romney than even his campaign team would have us believe.
