The same fundraiser said he's "crazy about" his friend Perry and that the Texas governor is an "excellent candidate," but stressed that the Romney strategy will continue to be to press who is the better candidate to beat Obama in the general election.
"You've got the issue of: Well, now you have to win the primary," said the fundraiser, who requested anonymity. "Rick plays well in the primary because he throws out a lot of red meat and so that excites the base, his primary base. He'll be formidable in the primary. The question is: Who is going to be formidable in the general [election]?"
The same donor opened the door to a distinction that Romney will clearly make when the campaign needs to start contrasting the two.
"He's only been a politician for four years, Romney," he said. "He's a businessman for 25 years. Rick -- God love him -- has been in politics almost all his life."
(...) Campaign advisers are willing to be more frank on condition of anonymity, admitting the "Perry strategy" is still being worked out. An adviser said the camp is "not sure yet" with how they'll deal with Perry.
The adviser added: "As it [the campaign] has gone through all these different number twos here, if you will -- from Huckabee to Palin to Trump to Barbour and Daniels, all the rest, Bachmann, now Perry -- we've been focused and disciplined on doing what we think the voters want to hear and I don't think there's any reason to change that." A lo mejor tienen razon cuando dicen que la experiencia privada va a ser un factor de gran importancia en la elección general pero yo no lo veo así. A Obama y su gente (maquinaria politica de Chicago) ya los conocemos y para ganarles una campaña hay que tener una piel politica durisima, ser un gran campaigner y ser implacable. Esto es lo importante y, por lo que he leido y visto de sus campañas previas Perry es ese tipo de persona. Si se ha decidido a presentarse hará todo lo que sea necesario para ganar. Obama, a pesar de su imagen agradable, tambien es ese tipo de persona.
Si ambos son los candidatos va a ser una campaña tremenda.

Hay sobre todo una cosa que Perry tiene más que Romney: instinto. Y efectivamente ese es un valor muy apreciado en campaña cuando la cosa empieza a rodar de verdad.
Y creo que eso, un mayor instinto político, es precisamente gracias a lo que hace cuatro años McCain y Huckabee le comieron la tostada a Romney.

Y sobre McCain, no se si lo recuerdas, pero cuando estalló la crisis financiera en plena campaña contra Obama, el presidente Bush planteó el primer rescate financiero y, en un primer instante, McCain hizo unas declaraciones, sin duda instintivas, en las que se oponía a la utilización del dinero de los contribuyentes para resactar a los bancos de su propia mala gestión. Posteriorment, cambió de postura y vino la foto con Bush y Obama.
Muchas veces me he preguntado que habría pasado (en las elecciones y a la economía USA) si McCain hubiera seguido su instinto y se hubiera mantenido en su postura inicial. Supongo que Obama habría ganado de todas formas.

McCain tuvo que hacer muchos equilibrios al tener a su partido en la Casa Blanca.
