President Barack Obama opened a star-studded campaign fundraiser here Sunday with a joke about his poor performance in last week’s debate against Republican Mitt Romney.

Following George Clooney, Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry and Earth Wind and Fire’s turns on the stage at Nokia Theater, the president remarked about how they always perform “flawlessly.”

“I can’t always say the same,” he added, drawing laughter and some cheers from the crowd.

Mr. Obama arrived in California Sunday for a two-day fundraising swing through Los Angeles and San Francisco that’s expected to rake in at least $9.5 million. Despite raising $181 million in September, a monthly record, Mr. Obama’s decision to spend time in a state that’s not in play in the election underscores his aides belief that he’ll need millions more to sustain his re-election effort in the last four weeks of the campaign.
