(...) If he runs for president, former House speaker Newt Gingrich said tonight he wants a "serious adult conversation" about issues rather than a campaign driven by 30-second ads and "nitpicking baloney."
Gingrich, whose conversation with about 600 Republican donors ran for more than 53 minutes tonight, said America is ready to replace President Obama in 2012 with a more conservative alternative.
"The American people today are demoralized, dispirited, worried and concerned because their elites have betrayed them, their system has crippled them and their government has failed them," Gingrich said at the Palm Beach County GOP's Lincoln Day dinner.
"All of those are fixable," Gingrich said. "I want to announce good news. We are 620 days from the moment in which there is a rebirth of freedom, a renewal of American pride and a relaunching of the American economy."
Gingrich said before the dinner that he's within a week or two of deciding whether to run for president.
If he runs, Gingrich said in his keynote speech, his campaign will record examples of "everyday Americans doing smart things" and post them on the Internet each night to show there is reason for optimism.
"I have no interest in running a 30-second attack ad that is petty, trivial, negative and destructive," Gingrich said. "I have every interest in a national dialogue." (...)
